The Aster Gentle Sweet Iron Baby Pelham combines the softer, more accommodating feel of the Gentle mouthpiece with the additional curb and leverage influence of a compact Baby Pelham cheek. It is designed for horses that benefit from greater movement and softness within the mouthpiece while requiring additional influence beyond that available from a straightforward snaffle action.
Unlike the more stabilising Confidence mouthpieces, Gentle allows greater movement and response within the mouth. This creates a more mobile interaction between horse and rider and can suit horses that already understand the rein aids but prefer a softer, less fixed feel within the mouth.
The Baby Pelham adds another dimension to that communication. As the relevant rein is engaged, leverage brings the curb into action beneath the jaw, distributing the rider’s aid beyond the mouth and introducing curb and poll influence. This can provide additional control and refinement without requiring the rider to achieve that influence solely through increased mouthpiece pressure.
Made from Sweet Iron, the mouthpiece naturally oxidises with use, producing its characteristic taste, which can encourage acceptance and salivation.
The combination is particularly useful for horses that are comfortable with a more mobile mouthpiece but require greater influence in situations such as jumping, faster work or more exciting environments. The intention is to retain softness and responsiveness through the mouth while giving the rider access to additional communication when required.
